Health restrictions barely lifted, avian flu is back in the Gers. A new blow and an epidemic out of control according to breeders.
In Manciet (Gers), David Penelle, breeder installed for four years, accuses the blow: last Sunday, his 15,000 ducks were slaughtered due to a new episode of avian flu. Faster and more virulent, it overwhelms breeders. “What we are projecting is 52,000 ducks per year. And I have 51,000 ducks slaughtered in three years”he laments.
Compensation that drags on
David is not alone in this case. Less than 15 minutes away, in Castillon-Debats (Gers), Lionel Candelon, breeder and founder of “Angry Ducks”can’t take it anymore. “I don’t think there is a profession today in France which for two years has not been able to work. It has never happened”, comments the latter. He regrets that he has not yet received several compensations from the State. Within the fateful 10 km radius of an avian flu outbreak, Lionel’s farm is awaiting a preventive slaughter of all its ducks.
