In Haute-Savoie, an entire village has become a refuge for birds, a first in France. The municipality of Monnetier-Mornex is committed to preserving biodiversity throughout its territory.
The village of Monnetier-Mornex (Haute-Savoie) is nestled on the edge of the Savoyard massif. With its 500 hectares of forest, it is a true paradise for birds and wild animals. In the shared communal garden, everything is done to protect them. The municipality is the first to become a refuge throughout its territory LPO, an animal protection label.
About ten nesting boxes have been installed on the edge of the forests, and an insect hotel has been built with other inhabitants. The project was led by Frédérique Léone, elected from the municipality in charge of the environment. 51 species of birds have been identified in Monnetier-Mornex, a treasure she wants to save. “We have an animal diversity which is extraordinary”, she explains. The no-hunting zone has also been enlarged.
