Committed to the Ghent-Wevelgem classic in Belgium, the rider from the Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux team Binam Girmay won to everyone’s surprise and thus entered the history of his sport. The 21-year-old athlete simultaneously becomes the first Eritrean and the first runner from a sub-Saharan African country to win a World Tour event.
A consecration for the young man, very touched at the end of the race. “It’s just incredible, I couldn’t hope for so much! (…) It will change a lot of things for my future and that of African runners”, he said after the race.
