Bill against online harms expected to be tabled on Monday

The Government of Canada is expected to table a bill against online harm on Monday.

In the past, the Liberal government has promised it would tackle online issues such as child endangerment and non-consensual sharing of intimate images.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced last week that his government’s next bill would focus on internet safety for minors, without imposing censorship on the rest of Canadians.

Mr. Trudeau first pledged to legislate during the 2019 federal election campaign, but a bill targeting online hate speech died on the Order Paper when he called an early federal election in 2021.

He then promised to re-introduce the bill within the first 100 days of his new term, but he failed to do so.

The legislation is expected to pave the way for creating a new ombudsman position to address public concerns about online content, as well as defining a new regulatory role that would oversee the conduct of internet platforms .

Federal Justice Minister Arif Virani is expected to hold a press conference on the bill on Monday afternoon.
