Montreal will add 200 kilometers of safe cycle paths to its network over the next five years. As part of its Vision vélo 2023-2027 plan, the City will proceed with the development of new sections of the Réseau express vélo (REV), in particular on rue Jean-Talon and on boulevard Henri-Bourassa.
For the sake of fairness, the city will add bike paths and improve bicycle infrastructure in 17 of Montreal’s 19 boroughs.
According to Councilor Sophie Mauzerolle, responsible for transport and mobility on the executive committee, the realization of the REV Saint-Denis has demonstrated that secure cycle paths benefit not only cyclists, but also pedestrians and merchants.
The announcement was made by the administration of Valérie Plante on Tuesday in the presence of several borough mayors, as well as the regional director of public health (DRSP) of Montreal, the DD Mylene Drouin. “It testifies to a new paradigm that has been in place for several years,” said Dr. Drouin, who insisted on the importance of territorial equity and the establishment of cycling infrastructure in less well-off neighborhoods.
Remember that last April, the Montreal DRSP submitted an impact assessment of the REV which recommended increasing investments in neighborhoods less well served by the current cycling network to reach more vulnerable populations.
