Biden hosts summit against political extremism in the United States

WASHINGTON | President Joe Biden will organize a conference in September aimed at combating political extremism and racist violence in America, the White House announced on Friday, less than three months before legislative elections which promise to be difficult for the Democrats.

The US presidency is to hold the “United We Stand” summit on September 15 to “respond to the corrosive effects of hate-motivated violence on our democracy and public safety,” a statement said. Karine Jean-Pierre, spokeswoman for the White House.

The American executive, in addition to highlighting its action, intends to take this opportunity to “expose a common vision of a more united America”, she added.

Faced with recent gun massacres that have targeted black, Hispanic or Asian populations, “Americans remain largely united in their opposition to such violence,” said Ms. Jean-Pierre.

Joe Biden has made the defense of democracy one of his major themes since he arrived at the head of the country, and the White House recalls that he made his decision to run in 2017, when his predecessor Donald Trump had refused to condemn a violent ultra-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The American president must deliver the main speech at this summit, which must also welcome representatives of the police, the business world and civil society. Republicans and Democrats will be invited, the White House added.

The conference must take place less than two months before the midterm legislative elections, scheduled for November 8, during which the Republicans could delight the Democrats with the majority in Congress.
