Bibi Club | The life that beats ★★★ ½

Intimate in nature, the musical project Bibi Club is that of the duo – and the couple – formed by the singer Adèle Trottier-Rivard and Nicolas Basque, seasoned guitarist of the group Plants and Animals. They composed the eight songs of their album The sun and the sea when time and their children permitted.

The first is called The balcony, as if the two members of Bibi Club were opening the door to their cocoon for us. “It’s mild on the steps, take my hand,” hums Adèle Trottier-Rivard as her lover accompanies her with simplicity and delicacy.

We change register with the dancing electro of The night, but the intimate tone remains. In English and all in joy, the play Parasite is reminiscent of Stereolab, while Morning evokes with its dissonance the numbed momentum of the night which ends to give way to day.

With Bibi Club, we are in the present moment, in objects, nature and everything around us. A denial of everyday life? Rather an invitation to let things go without controlling them too much. The life that beats, what.

At least that’s the feeling that the album gives us. Especially on the extract Woman-Lady, gentle rock frenzy carried by a new-wave bass, dancing keyboards and the breathless guitar chords of Nicolas Basque. Adèle Trottier-Rivard also sings with her mother Marie-Christine and her sister Joséphine.

Now it’s up to you to become a member of Bibi Club, which will be performing on September 29 at the Ministère as part of Pop Montréal.
