Bronchiolitis puts the hospital under strain every winter, with up to 50,000 emergency room admissions. Preventive treatment could greatly reduce the number of hospitalizations.

Avoiding the hospitalization of nearly 50,000 babies each year is the promise made by Beyfortus, a new treatment by injections against bronchiolitis. Recent clinical trials confirm, according to the laboratory, significant effectiveness. “We recruited 8,000 babies in this study, and we demonstrated an efficiency of more than 80%”explains Charles Wolf, the general manager of vaccines Sanofi France.

Authorized by the European Commission

Already authorized by the European Commission since 2022, Beyfortus has not yet received the agreement of the High Authority for Health (HAS), nor has it been the subject of any scientific publication. Prof. Christelle Gras-Le Guen, head of the pediatrics department at the University Hospital of Nantes (Loire-Atlantique), who participated in the study, sees the treatment as a real breakthrough. If approved, Beyfortus could overtake other laboratories also in the race for the treatment of bronchiolitis.
