Bev Priestman takes positives from Canada’s Gold Cup performance

Jessie Fleming did everything but score in a penalty shootout in the semi-final of the inaugural Women’s Gold Cup.

However, the 25-year-old Ontarian was not the only one. On Wednesday, it was American goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher who stole the show during the penalty shootout. She stopped Fleming, Adriana Leon and Jordyn Huitema. Naeher even scored during the session.

Canada forced overtime at 1-1, then penalties at 2-2, but ultimately lost 3-1 in the shootout.

“I’m just really proud of the players,” said Canada head coach Bev Priestman. I couldn’t ask for more from them. »

At the Tokyo Olympics, Canada won its matches against Brazil and Japan in penalties. On Wednesday, Naeher was just too good. “We were on the side [victorieux] before, Priestman added. We weren’t for this match. »

Fleming was the last to shoot for Canada, but was unable to beat Naeher.

However, Fleming, who took over the role of captain following Christine Sinclair’s international retirement, has no reason to blame herself for leading her team through the tournament.

“For me, Jessie was incredible throughout the tournament,” shared Priestman. These are probably things that few people see. His leadership, I can’t speak more strongly about someone who had to step into such big shoes. She led by example. »

As the Americans prepare to face tournament favorites Brazil in the final on Sunday, Canadian players return to their teams with the next international event at the SheBelieves Cup next month.

Canada will begin the tournament against Brazil, while the United States will play Japan. The two winning countries will face each other in the final and the two losers will compete for third place.

At the end of July in Paris, Canada will want to defend its Olympic title, won at the last Games in Tokyo.

The wish for Priestman is to be able to count on Janine Beckie, Nichelle Prince, Desire Scott, Jayde Riviere and Sydney Collins, currently injured, again in Paris.
