Caregivers are still on the front line of the epidemic and wonder every day about what awaits them. On February 6, 2020, the hospital in Valenciennes, in the North, received its first patient affected by Covid-19. Testimonials from caregivers 700 days later.
“The days are alike, the weeks are alike, the months are alike, so the end of the tunnel, no, we can’t see it”, says a caregiver at the Valenciennes hospital (North). “We don’t have the right to leave the ship. It’s hard, of course, but we’ll get through it. It’s the job I love, and as long as I hold on, I’ll hold on”, said a nurse. On February 6, 2020, the first Covid patient entered Valenciennes hospital. The nursing staff remembers this. “For the first wave, we expected war, really”, recognizes Eduardo Jimenez, nurse.
Since the reception of the first patient, more than 700 days have accumulated. “It was very complicated to manage psychologically”, remembers Emilie fish, nurse in the emergency department for 16 years. “It’s a fight, says Philipe Lambert, stretcher-bearer for 30 years in the Valenciennes emergency room. I am mixed between fragile and ready to crack.” “We had moments of doubt, we say to ourselves that we were not close enough to people”, adds Emily fish. A difficult daily life punctuated by rewarding moments: “We have thanks, looks (…) We feel valued in our profession thanks to that”, appreciates Eduardo Jimenez.
