The services of the Ministry of Finance estimate that 10 billion euros can be recovered, partly thanks to cuts in health expenditure linked to sick leave. Point.

The sick leaves, more and more numerous, are in the sights of Bercy. There were 6.4 million in 2012, and 8.8 in 2022. For Bruno Le Maire, the Minister of Economy and Finance, it’s too much. “Does anything justify that sick leaves have increased by 30% in recent years? This represents a total expenditure of 16 billion euros per year“, he says. For the government, all avenues are on the table to lower the bill. In particular, he plans to involve employers.

Another day off?

In Toulouse (Haute-Garonne), Jean-Claude Henri bought a construction company 5 years ago. In the process, he invested in a machine that makes machining his joinery less tiring, and set up a four-day week. “We already have many, many charges, and the period is still quite complicated, post-Covid”he believes.

Bercy could also solicit employees, by adding a waiting day, or an additional unpaid sick day. While waiting for concrete measures, the control of work stoppages is intensifying, in particular those which are not accompanied by any prescription for treatment or medication.
