Two days before the Armenian genocide ceremonies, the mayor of Marseille announces that he will twin the Marseille city with Yerevan, capital of Armenia, France Bleu Provence reported on Monday April 22. On his X account, Benoît Payan wrote: “I propose that Marseille and Yerevan become sister cities for eternity”. He wants to officially twin the two cities “so that the children of Marseille and the children of Yerevan know each other and grow together.”

At the same time, the facade of Marseille city hall was lit up in red, orange and blue, the colors of the Armenian flag. The faces of the recently pantheonized resistance fighters, Mélinée and Missak Manouchian, were also projected onto the town hall. Today, around 80,000 people of Armenian origin live in Marseille, or 10% of the population.
