The Palestinians have filed a petition before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to join South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza, according to court documents released Monday.

“On May 31, the State of Palestine filed with the Registry of the Court a request for authorization to intervene and a declaration of intervention,” the ICJ said in a statement.

South Africa took the case to the ICJ last year, alleging that the Israeli offensive in Gaza violated the 1948 UN genocide convention, a charge Israel strongly denies.

Until now, the Palestinians had only sent high-ranking representatives to follow the hearings in The Hague.
