Benfica knock out Juventus, Chelsea and Dortmund through, first loss for Real… What to remember from Tuesday’s other games

The card of PSG and its seven goals scored against Maccabi Haifa will remain as the highlight of this Tuesday, October 25 in the Champions League. But it is far from being the only lesson to be learned from this fifth day. A look back at the seven other matches of the European evening, between qualification, disillusion and first.

Benfica on fire eliminates Juventus and slips into the eighth

In what looked like a round of 16, Benfica confirmed their good arrangements for the double confrontation against Paris Saint-Germain. The Lisboètes dominated Juventus 4-3, a score which does not reflect the dominance of the Portuguese formation on the whole match. They even gave PSG a thrill at a distance, when at 4-1 (50th) in their favor, the first place in group H belonged to them. The young Samuel Iling-Junior, 19, revived the Bianconeri, in vain and much too late. The Old Lady sadly leaves the competition, and is not at all guaranteed to be transferred to the Europa League.

Dortmund muzzle City and qualify

For his return to the lawn of his former successes, Erling Haaland remained silent. The poster between Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City, which we hoped would end with a string of goals, ended in a 0-0 a little frustrating. In the absence of a show, this fine defensive performance ensures BvB their place in the round of 16, while the Cityzens had already punched their ticket the previous day and locked the head of their group. The Marsupials can thank their goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who stopped a penalty from Riyad Mahrez with a superb save in the second half.

The French from Leipzig bend Real

Only one person is missing… Without Karim Benzema, put to rest, Real Madrid conceded their first defeat of the season, on the lawn of RB Leipzig (3-2). The German outfit were already leading 2-0 after 19 minutes, with another goal from Christopher Nkunku. Timo Werner took advantage of the fantastic work of Mohamed Simakan to validate the success of his team at the end of the match, and to pay a fine tribute to Dietrich Mateschitz, former boss of Red Bull who initiated the creation of the club and died last Saturday. This result has no consequences for Real, already qualified, but it brings Leipzig a little closer to qualification. All they need is a point against Shakhtar Donetsk in the last match.

Giroud and Milan relaunch

Mute like all his team during the two games against Chelsea, Olivier Giroud found his way to the goal on the lawn of Dinamo Zagreb, in the wide success of AC Milan (0-4). The Rossoneri did not give details and are ideally positioned for qualification. They now have their destiny in their hands, second with a point ahead of Salzburg, beaten on their lawn by Chelsea (3-1) earlier in the evening. Graham Potter’s Blues continue their recovery and have secured both their qualification and first place in Group E.
