It is a national tribute. Church bells rang across the UK on Friday in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who died aged 96 on Thursday after 70 years of reign.

The bells of St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey in London, as well as those of Windsor Castle, notably came to life as the new King Charles III was en route to London from the Scottish residence of Balmoral.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the Abbey’s tenor bell is tolling once every minute for the next hour.

A salvo of cannon fire must also be fired at hyde Park, at London, at 1 p.m. (local time). A total of 96 shots will be fired, in reference to the queen’s age. Also, the flags of the royal residences will remain at half mast until “8 hours after the last day of mourning”also specifies the royal palace.
