Bell Canada | A tentative agreement reached with office staff

(Montreal) The union that represents Bell’s clerical staff in Quebec and Ontario, some 4,200 people, has reached an agreement in principle with Bell Canada.

An unlimited strike mandate was voted in June, a first according to the Unifor union.

Ratification meetings will be held over the next few weeks for members, who are represented by ten Unifor locals in the two provinces.

They are, for example, billing or information workers — office workers in general.

“The bargaining committee believes that this is the best agreement in principle possible without calling a strike,” said Daniel Cloutier, Quebec director of Unifor.

No details of the deal are known. However, the disputes concerned wages, telecommuting and job security, in a context of offshoring of jobs in this type of industry in recent years.
