The hospital, hardly attractive for the youngest caregivers, is understaffed. In the North, students who train in Belgium often choose to stay there to start their career.

Trained in Belgium to circumvent the constraint of competitions, Adrien Froment has been an emergency nurse in Tournai (Belgium) for 12 years. He does not hesitate to travel 60 km a day to get to work. The organization of work is his primary motivation. “It’s a way of taking care of the patient from A to Z, (…) something that was a little more sectorized in France”he explains.

With his status as a cross-border worker, he also benefits from advantageous taxation and bonuses which make his salary more attractive. His salary amounts, all accumulated, to 3,500 euros net. This is also what motivates Justine Florecq, a nurse living near Lens (Pas-de-Calais). One caregiver in four is French at Tournai hospital. A boon for the establishment, which has also suffered from a shortage of staff since the Covid-19.
