Belarusian foreign minister dies suddenly

Belarus Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei has died at the age of 64, the country’s Belta news agency, whose President Alexander Lukashenko is a close ally of Moscow, announced on Saturday.

Belarus made its territory available to Russian forces to launch their offensive against Ukraine in February. kyiv accuses Moscow of using this country as a logistical rear base and to carry out its strikes.

“Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei died suddenly,” Belta said, quoting his spokesman Anatoly Glaz.

Mr. Makeï took part this week in Yerevan in Armenia at a summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a military alliance led by Moscow.

In February, he assured that “not a single” Russian soldier would remain in Belarus after joint maneuvers with Moscow on the Ukrainian border, a few weeks before the offensive.
