Beijing Olympics: Kim Boutin in bronze in the 500m short track

Sherbrooke resident Kim Boutin won the bronze medal in the 500 meter short track speed skating event at the Beijing Olympics.

Aged 27, already a triple Olympic medalist, she won the bronze medal in this distance at the Pyeongchang Games in 2018.

In the final at the Palais Omnisports in the capital on Monday evening, Boutin remained stuck in third position from start to finish. The Italian Arianna Fontana triumphed in front of the Dutch Suzanne Schulting.

So far, the Canadian team was having a disastrous night. Florence Brunelle had been penalized in the first race of the evening for having caused her teammate Alyson Charles and the Chinese Fan Kexin to fall. Charles advanced to the semi-finals, where she finished fourth. She then took third place in the B final for an eighth position in the final standings.

For their part, Pascal Dion and Jordan Pierre-Gilles had been eliminated in the men’s 1000m in the quarter-finals.

Dion had suffered a terrible fall while trying to overtake from the outside, while Pierre-Gilles had been penalized for overtaking too aggressively in the eyes of the judges against local favorite Wu Dajing.
