Kaillie Humphries gave her opponents no chance in the women’s monobob event at the Beijing Olympics on Monday at the Yanqing National Sliding Center.
In her first Olympic competition as an American citizen, Humphries dominated the first three runs to easily win the gold medal.
Humphries finished the first day of competition with a 1.04 second lead over Canadian Christine de Bruin, but she was even more dominant on the final day.
Humphries finished the four runs with a combined time of 4:19.27, 1.54 seconds ahead of American Elana Meyers Taylor (4:20.81), who took the silver medal. De Bruin won the bronze medal with a time of 4:21.03.
Cynthia Appiah, the other Canadian to compete in this event, posted a combined time of 4:23.04 and took eighth place.
Humphries earned a third career Olympic gold and fourth overall. It was the first monobob competition in the history of the Games.
Reigning world champion in monobob, Humphries took part in three Olympics under the colors of the maple leaf before representing the United States due to a dispute with Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton. The 36-year-old athlete filed a harassment complaint against a national team coach in 2018.
