(Emeryville) Gracenote, a data analytics company, predicts that Norway will dominate the medal table at the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, while Canada will be fifth with 23 charms.
The California-based company, which provides statistical analysis to several sports leagues around the world, has released its medal projections for the Olympics next February. Gracenote placed Norway, Russia, Germany and the United States in the top-4.
According to her, Norway will triumph with a harvest of 45 medals, including 22 gold. The Canadian harvest would consist of five gold, eight silver and 10 bronze for Canada.
According to these predictions, China would win eight medals, including four gold.
Gracenote awarded gold medals to Canada in men’s and women’s hockey, mogul specialist Mikaël Kingsbury, snowboarder Maxence Parrot, as well as speed skater Laurent Dubreuil, but expects the country to be cleared in the curling.
This is an upward forecast for Canada. At 100 days of the Olympics, Gracenote predicted 21 medals, including four gold.
Norway finished at the top of the medal table with 39, including 14 gold, at the last Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, in 2018. Canada took third place with 29, including 11 gold, behind Germany (31).
Canada finished ahead of the United States (23) in South Korea, but has yet to collect more medals than its mainland neighbors in two back-to-back Winter Games.
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced several athletes in Asia to forgo international competitions, resulting in a lack of data for Gracenote to analyze.
