BEI opens investigation into person who died in interrogation room

The Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) said a person found unconscious in a Sûreté du Québec interrogation room this month has died.

The BEI launched an investigation after the individual was seriously injured while in police custody on 1er March, in Campbell’s Bay, in Outaouais.

In a press release, the BEI indicates that the person was arrested at his home the same morning, around 8:40 a.m., and was discovered unconscious in an interrogation room around 11:15 a.m.

First aid was provided to the person, who was rushed to hospital in serious condition.

The death was confirmed Monday, but the BEI declined to reveal the person’s age or gender, citing confidentiality.

The Independent Investigations Office opens an investigation when a person dies or is seriously injured during police intervention or while in police custody.
