He is one of the greatest French filmmakers, the northerner Arnaud Desplechin is currently filming in Lille and Roubaix with Brother and sister. As its title suggests, family and siblings will once again be at the heart of the story. The filmmaker brought together Marion Cotillard, Melvil Poupaud and Benjamin Siksou for the casting.

The scenario of Brother and sister focuses on the story of a brother and sister in their late fifties who have not spoken to each other for over twenty years. Alice (Marion Cotillard) is an actress, Louis (Melvil Poupaud) was a teacher and poet, each leads his life in the indifference of the other but when their parents die, they will be brought to cross.

For 37 years that he has been shooting and after twenty film productions, Arnaud Desplechin once again probes the intimate and sometimes conflicting ties that bind the members of a family. “We always help someone in your family badly and insufficiently and yet there is this peace which arrives, which is born little by little and which will fill the film with a very solar and luminous thing which moves me very strongly”, reveals the filmmaker.

Twelve years later A Christmas tale, Melvil Poupaud returns to the side of Arnaud Desplechin and measures to what extent the unspoken, the wounds of the past, the grudges and the family jealousies permeate the cinema of the director. “I feel that there is a new dimension in his work and with this film there is something of the order of repair, it’s beautiful to see him working with this subject”, reports the actor. For Benjamin Siksou, discovered in the film Three memories of my youth (2015), filming with the filmmaker from the North is a real pleasure. “He knows exactly what he wants, which reassures everyone and at the same time, he is constantly looking. It gives a brilliant contrast”, he rejoices.

While waiting for the screening of Brother and sister, Desplechin fans will be able to discover in theaters on December 29, 2021 Deception, an adaptation of the eponymous novel by Philip Roth with Léa Seydoux and Denis Podalydès.
