After the rejection of his law on immigration, Gérald Darmanin took a turn for the worse. Maintained in the Ministry of the Interior by Emmanuel Macron despite his desire to resign, he is now trying to bounce back. But how could he have suffered such a setback? Explanations.
Unheard of in the chamber for 25 years. Smiling tight, Gérald Darmanin takes the biggest slap of his career. His bill was rejected before it had even been debated. He who hoped for success, he finds himself defeated, shaken. How did the Minister of the Interior fail his emblematic reform? Smiling, relaxed, in the mood to joke, at the beginning of November in the Senate, Gérald Darmanin seemed confident. He came to defend his immigration bill. The Republicans being in the majority, he insisted on the firmness of his reform. At the time, at the Luxembourg Palace, several right-wing senators were ready to support him. But a month later, the Senate text was unraveled by the deputies. By wanting to spare both the right and the left wing of the majority, Gérald Darmanin attracts the wrath of the Republicans.
A first resounding failure
Gérald Darmanin accused of betraying the right, the story is not new. He who spent his entire career within the UMP. Member of Parliament, mayor of Tourcoing, he dropped everything in 2017 to join Emmanuel Macron’s camp. Here he is minister, the Budget, then the Interior, like his model Nicolas Sarkozy. But among the Republicans, there is no question of sparing the former rising star. The message is clear, Gérald Darmanin no longer has anything to expect from his former friends. Gérald Darmanin fails, he who wanted, with this reform, to show his political ability.
The same evening, a resignation presented to the President of the Republic was refused. The next day, the Minister of the Interior returned to his fundamentals and occupied the field. The strategy now is to take public opinion as a witness. A reform which is now in the hands of 14 parliamentarians of all stripes. Gérald Darmanin is no longer directly in charge. Whatever the outcome, he will have to deal with this resounding failure, the first of his career.
