After the explosion of beepers that killed 12 people and injured 1,800 in Lebanon, Hezbollah has promised to punish Israel. For it, the responsibility of the Hebrew state is beyond doubt. How could such an elaborate operation have been carried out?
A pager was sitting on a piece of furniture when it exploded. Its owner, very lucky, was not wearing it. Another man, who had his on his belt, was seriously injured. As were 1,800 other Hezbollah members caught on their scooters, in their cars, or in the street, among stunned passers-by.
Israeli intelligence is said to have infiltrated Hezbollah’s supply logistics and planted a few grams of explosives on each aircraft. “Mossad got its hands on the devices before they were delivered by ship to Lebanon”says Yossi Melman, a historian of Israeli intelligence. According to a Taiwanese business leader named as the manufacturer of the beepers, the devices were made at his Hungarian partner’s, based in Budapest. Israel has not commented on the attack.
