(Saint-Georges) Firefighters are still working to put out a major fire that started around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday and caused the evacuation of a residential building in Saint-Georges, Beauce.

It was the police who noticed the flames on 1D avenue during their morning patrol. A dozen people had to be evacuated, said the spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), Béatrice Dorsainville. They weren’t hurt. However, one person is still missing.

Four buildings were damaged by the flames, including a residential building and a business that suffered serious damage. Another commercial building and an apartment building were damaged to a lesser extent.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time. The SQ’s Major Crimes Investigation Division took over the investigation. A mobile command post was erected at the scene.

The 1D avenue is closed to road traffic.
