BC Place stadium will be renamed “Christine Sinclair Place” for one evening only, to pay tribute to the captain of the Canadian women’s soccer team, who will play her final career international match there.
The 40-year-old from Burnaby, British Columbia, will end her international career by playing two matches at home against Australia — first on Friday at Starlight Stadium in Langford, British Columbia and then on December 5 in Vancouver.
Christine Sinclair, who plans to play a final season with the Portland Thorns in the NWSL, is the top scorer in the history of women’s soccer with 190 successes in 329 appearances on the international scene.
Around 40,000 tickets have already been sold for the December 5 match in Vancouver. The match at Langford is guaranteed to be a sell-out.
The star player has played nine career matches at BC Place, including the Concacaf Zone Olympic Qualifying Tournament final against the United States in 2012, the World Cup quarterfinal match against England in 2015 and the one against Nigeria in April 2022 – during which the new top scorer mark established by Sinclair was officially highlighted.
Furthermore, Australian team captain Sam Kerr will miss the two matches against Canada due to a foot injury.
Chelsea, Kerr’s English club, has indicated that the 30-year-old star will remain in London to undergo treatment during the international break.
Kerr, who began her career with the Australian team at the age of 15, is the top scorer in the history of the “Matildas”, with 69 successes.
