International rugby player Bastien Chalureau was sentenced on Tuesday January 16 to six months in prison, suspended on appeal, for violence against two men committed in 2020. However, the racist nature of the attack was ultimately not accepted.

“Bastien Chalureau is not proud of the violence he committed, but he is not a racist”, declared to the press, in the absence of the player, his lawyer, David Mendel. The latter says “extremely satisfied” duty “that the file was respected and that Bastien Chalureau was acquitted of this infamous aggravating circumstance with which he was accused”.

At first instance, the rugby player from Montpellier Hérault Rugby was sentenced a little over three years ago to the same sentence, but the court estimated that the violence, committed on the night of January 31, 2020 in the center of Toulouse, had been “because of the victim’s race or ethnicity”. The 31-year-old rugby player has always denied having notably thrown “How are you guys?”as the plaintiffs claimed. Due to this first judgment, the selection with the XV of France during the World Cup in September created controversy.
