The New York Mets spent lavishly this past offseason and owner Steve Cohen is thrilled.
“I am very satisfied with the way [la saison morte] took place, said the billionaire on Monday at a press conference. We had a lot of players who benefited from their autonomy. So we had a lot of people to replace and it went really well.
“I’m very excited about this team,” he added. While walking yesterday [dimanche], I felt a wonderful atmosphere. I think this is the best I have felt since owning it. It’s a great team.
According to the specialized site spotrac, the Mets will pay just over $333 million in salaries for the 2023 season. The organization will have to pay around $111 million in luxury tax, a peak in major league baseball.
The Mets notably lost the services of Jacob deGrom, Chris Bassitt and Taijuan Walker, but hired Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga and Jose Quintana at a high price. They also offered lucrative contract extensions to Edwin Diaz and Brandon Nimmo.
Cohen bought the Mets for $2.4 billion in 2020 and serves as the club’s CEO.
