(New York) New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal was fined $2,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct in Sunday’s loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The NHL’s health and safety department announced the decision on Monday.
While sitting on the bench with almost four minutes left in the third period, Barzal grabbed the jersey of Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner for a few seconds, preventing him from joining the action.
Marner told CBC it was a first for him and he “wants him to be fined for it.” That would be good enough.”
“He and I played against each other a lot and sometimes together,” Marner added after the game. He’s a good friend. He is a born competitor. It’s fun to see that and to play against him. It’s a pretty funny moment. »
Given the result, the Islanders were excluded from the playoffs.
This is the third time in Barzal’s career that he has been penalized by the NHL. He had to pay $2,000 for diving/exaggerating in April 2021 and then $5,000 two months later for a cross-check on Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Jan Rutta.
