(Ottawa) Sales in the Canadian food services and drinking places subsector rose 3% in May, from the previous month, to $7.4 billion, their highest level since the start of the pandemic. of COVID-19, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

Sales of drinking places rose 6.1% while those of full-service restaurants rose 3.1%, the federal agency said. Limited-service eating establishments saw their sales rise 1.9%.

Sales of the special food services category, which includes caterers, food trucks and companies that supply food under contracts, including through franchises, cafeterias or airlines, jumped 8.1%.

All provinces recorded an increase in sales, while most of them had lifted their restrictions linked to the pandemic in May.

The strongest increase was in Ontario, where sales of food services and drinking places rose 3.8%. It was followed by Quebec, where sales rose 3.5%.

Unadjusted sales for May were up 62.2% from May 2021, Statistics Canada said, and 12.7% from May 2019.
