January 25, 2022 was a special day for Barbara Opsomer. The former candidate of Secret Story (season 11, in 2017) had to go to the hospital to undergo an operation. A story told to its subscribers, on Instagram, once the operation is complete.
Barbara Opsomer had cancerous cells in her uterus. So she had to be hospitalized for conization (a procedure that involves surgically removing part of the cervix to remove cancer cells). Fortunately, everything went well for the former resident of the House of Secrets. She therefore wanted to give her news in story and, on her newsfeed, she did prevention so that the young women who follow her don’t make the same mistake as her.
“About ten years ago, following a smear, I was told that I was a carrier of the papillomavirus and that I had to have an irreproachable life. I was young and I did not measure the gravity of what I had just learned. Maybe out of fear I left that in the back of my mind, until I completely forgot about it. Surely denial…“, first explained Barbara Opsomer. But when she became pregnant with her first child, her gynecologist reminded her of the importance of being followed for this concern. Once Gabriel (8 months) was born, she therefore dealt with the problem so as not to aggravate the situation.
“I still feel lucky not to have to have my uterus removed because even if today I don’t feel like having a second child, who knows what the future holds? I nevertheless think of the women to whom it happens and give them all my support.“, continued Barbara Opsomer. Then, she highlighted the importance for young women to be screened in order to take charge of the disease as early as possible. “There is a vaccine against the papillomavirus which is another way to fight against this cancer which is possible for girls and boys! And yes, the boys too! Remember that this vaccine helps prevent infections but does not replace preventive measures, such as screening. I hope that thanks to my testimony, you will remember to go for regular smears in order to avoid reaching an advanced stage.“, she concluded.
