The FIFA World Cup in 2022 will be played without Russia. The latter ended up accepting her fate, according to a press release published Tuesday, April 5 by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). After filing an appeal, the Russian Football Federation finally withdrew it on Wednesday March 30, confirms the CAS.
“The procedure will be closed shortly”specifies the CAS in its press release, while Russian football suffered a first setback on March 18, when the sports jurisdiction refused to suspend the sanctions of Fifa pending a decision on the merits.
Sbornaïa, quarter-finalist of the 2018 World Cup organized in Russia, was therefore unable to participate in the play-offs at the end of March for the Qatari tournament (November 21-December 18), leaving Poland to win its ticket to Doha.
The Russian Federation, on the other hand, maintains its procedure against UEFA, which has banned its clubs and selections from European competitions, while its women’s team still hopes to participate in Euro 2022 this summer in England (from July 6 to 31) . “No procedural timetable has been established at this time”warns the CAS, however.
In addition, the sports jurisdiction recorded a cascade of new procedures against the sanctions taken by the sports bodies after the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army. The Russian skating, biathlon, rowing, rugby and gymnastics federations are thus contesting the exclusion of their athletes from international competitions, specifies the CAS.
