Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane will miss Wednesday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets due to personal bankruptcy.

The 31-year-old is scheduled to appear in court in San Jose for seven days between Jan. 23 and Feb. 2, according to The Athletic reporter Daniel Kaplan. He should therefore also skip his turn on Saturday, against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Recall that Kane had declared bankruptcy amounting to US$26 million, or approximately C$33 million in January 2021. According to documents filed at the time by the California Bankruptcy Court, this was intended to protect more than 47 creditors that have been identified.
Among his setbacks, the native of Vancouver would also have had serious gambling problems. A Las Vegas casino, the Cosmopolitan, had sued him for debts. He reportedly lost nearly $1.5 million at the casino.
He is also the subject of a $15 million lawsuit from a financial institution from which he borrowed $1.5 million in March 2019 without returning any amount.
In 2022, Kane signed a four-year, $20.5 million contract with the Oilers. His previous seven-year, $49 million pact was terminated by the San Jose Sharks early last year.
The California team had released the player after a year 2021 marked by controversy. Among other things, he was suspended by the National League for violating COVID-19 protocol and sports betting allegations against his own team.
