banker Ludovit Odor appointed Prime Minister after the resignation of the interim government

The vice-president of the National Bank of Slovakia, Ludovit Odor, was appointed Prime Minister on Sunday 7 May. The president Slovak Zuzana Caputova made this announcement to the press after a meeting with the outgoing head of government, Eduard Heger, who had resigned a few hours earlier. She said the 46-year-old banker would be officially appointed the following week.

Appointed five months before the legislative elections on September 30, Ludovit Odor will be the third head of the Slovak government since the last election in 2020. “Naturally, the main criterion was expertise, but at the same time, only people who will not be candidates in the next parliamentary elections have been selected”declared the president, who had for “objective not to favor any of the political parties in the current pre-electoral competition”.

The outgoing prime minister was leading an interim coalition government, after losing a vote of confidence in parliament in December. Eduard Heger has asked the president to revoke her mandate, after a series of resignations within the executive.
