Protect the “Island of the Gods”. On Wednesday, February 14, Bali began imposing a tax of 150,000 rupees (10 dollars, or 9 euros) on tourists intended to preserve the Indonesian island, authorities reported. The fee will need to be paid online through the “Love Bali” portal and will apply to foreign tourists arriving in Bali from abroad or from other parts of Indonesia. The tax will not apply, however, to Indonesian tourists. The governor said online payment would reduce queues for arriving visitors.

Nearly 4.8 million tourists visited Bali between January and November last year, according to official figures, as the island’s tourism sector, which suffered greatly from the Covid-19 pandemic due to the closure of borders, continues to recover.

The tropical island has pledged to crack down on tourist incivility after several incidents, including naked foreigners in temples or sacred sites, which shocked the island’s majority Hindu population. Last year, the local government released a guide for tourists to Bali explaining behaviors to avoid.
