Montreal property owners recently received an envelope they might have preferred not to open: the one containing their most recent property assessment. Seeing the value of their homes soar, many broke into a cold sweat, fearing that their property taxes would jump at the same time.
It is only when the budget of the City of Montreal is tabled, on November 29, that they will be determined on the extent of the tax increase. In the meantime, we clarify the context in which this increase in the value of houses is rooted and we anticipate its consequences, for the owners, but also for the tenants.
