In recent years, we have seen an explosion in the use of trauma warnings, or “trigger warnings”, with the aim of preventing vulnerable audiences from reliving their traumatic episodes. We see them more and more on social networks, in the wake of denunciations of disturbing acts, but they are also attached to content intended for larger audiences to spare certain sensitivities.

Yet a meta-analysis of recent studies concludes that although the intentions behind their use are laudable, trauma warnings remain ineffective.
