A week ago, a fire in a heritage building in Old Montreal killed at least four people and injured nine. In addition to grieving several families, this tragedy has reignited the debate on the regulation of short-term rentals, since units in the burned building were illegally rented through the Airbnb platform. We return to the history of this tragedy to analyze the impact of the commodification of rental housing in Montreal.
