Badly fixed radiator: almost all Golf GTI and R 2022 are recalled

The Volkswagen manufacturer has issued a recall concerning its sports Golf GTI and Golf R. This targets 2,477 units in Canada, or almost all of the models sold in the country since their arrival on the market in the fall of 2021.

The problem is that the radiator might not be fixed correctly, according to the notice published by Transport Canada. As a result, a coolant hose could be damaged by the effect of contact with the serpentine belt pulley. If so, it is possible for coolant to leak and fall onto the road.

In such a situation, the driver would see a red warning light illuminate on the dashboard. If he ignores this warning and continues to drive, the engine could overheat or even catch fire.

Volkswagen will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their Golf GTI or Golf R to a dealership to confirm that the radiator is attached correctly. If not, the coolant hose and serpentine belt will also be checked for signs of damage. If necessary, parts will be replaced, all at no cost to the customer, of course.

This recall slightly tarnishes the record of these German sports compacts which, otherwise, represent the best buy in their category for 2023 according to The Car Guide.

By the way, there aren’t really any changes for the new model year, but let’s mention that the Golf GTI is celebrating its 40th anniversary on North American soil and the Golf R, its 20th. A special edition is planned for Canada. Stay tuned for details.
