In the Hautes-Pyrénées, two days after catastrophic floods, residents are still in shock on Monday, September 9.
To reach the hamlet of Héas (Hautes-Pyrénées), you have to leave your car. The road is nothing more than a field of stones. The river, which swept away everything on Saturday, September 7, no longer has a bed. In the middle of the night, farmers, helped by vacationers in a gîte, saved two occupants trapped in a camper van. “We only saw the arm and the head”explains Daniel Labit, breeder in Héas (Hautes-Pyrénées).
It was necessary to rope up to reach the man and pull, then go and get his wife upstream. In the Gavarnie area, 52 people had to be evacuated, including 14 airlifted. The catastrophic floods did not cause any casualties, but they swept away several cars and bridges. The village of Héas no longer has running water or electricity and a farmer has to tap a spring. On Monday afternoon, September 9, four more airlifts will take place.
