Sunday, July 24, some families choose to anticipate the purchase of school supplies. With inflation, the bill could be higher than in previous years.

An endless list and children who absolutely want to be present to choose their future notebooks and pens, the purchase of school supplies is always a dreaded moment for parents. This year, those purchases might be slightly different as families have to adjust to a budget that is getting tight with inflation. “My budget will be based on the price increase, of course, it is anticipated”, says a mother. To avoid paying too much, some parents go for promotions or bundles of several supplies.

Inflation affects all categories of expenses and supplies are no exception to the rule. The price of notebooks has increased by 18% in one year while highlighters have seen their prices explode with an increase of 38%. Shops are therefore adapting and relying on promotional packs to attract customers. Olivier Dauvers, retail specialist warns: “It is better to buy everything you need now (…) because in the coming months it will inevitably cost more.” Some families also turn to second-hand supplies which obviously cost less.
