“Bach: Partitas Reimagined”, Thomas Oehler, Trevor Pinnock and the Royal Academy of Music

Here is the team again Goldberg reviewed by Koffler, magical discovery of the year 2021. The transcriber this time is Thomas Oehler, who works on three of Bach’s keyboard partitas. Oehler is a professor at the London Academy of Music, and his transcription is recent. It is therefore not an old forgotten gem, as with Koffler, but there is a kinship of spirit in the sense of respect for the work and its illumination by another sound universe. The current of the Partita no 5 illustrates the success of Oehler’s work, because it is exactly the opposite of the approach of Goldberg by Kelly at Channel. The instruments serve to sparkle the spirit of Bach and not the music of Bach which serves as a pedestal for musicians. Pinnock says he immersed himself in the exercise with delight: “We had to establish a dual understanding of Bach’s keyboard writing and Oehler’s use of the orchestra. » He explains that the process then involved detaching himself from the keyboard. This passionate work is felt in every place.
