Azul y Garanza Cabirol Montsant 2021 | Affordable: traditions reinterpreted with respect

I have a lot of admiration for the trio of young people behind Azul y Garanza. They unearth old vineyards that they upgrade, favor native grape varieties and natural vinifications, and strive to protect and increase biodiversity.

In addition, their wines are very affordable while being faithful interpretations of their terroir. Here, with this Azul y Garanza Cabirol Montsant 2021, it is Grenache that flourishes at 400 meters above sea level in the mountains of Montsant, in Catalonia.

A dark impression emerges on the nose: lots of black fruit with a little black earth, garrigue, dried herbs. The palate is ample, rather full-bodied, with a hint of kirsch and candied fruit, but also a lot of freshness. Moderate, slightly rustic tannins add character.

The wine will benefit from being decanted and will accompany a lamb shank with lentils, a braised shoulder of venison or grilled meats on the barbecue.
