The story of “Avenue 5” takes place at the end of the 21st century, on a cruise spaceship, Avenue 5, en route to Saturn. Everything is going perfectly well until a sudden gravity reversal completely changes the trajectory of the luxury spacecraft, extending the duration of the cruise by several months. Captain Ryan Clark and his crew attempt to maintain order while searching for a solution to return to Earth.
Except that, comedy requires, there should be a lot of twists!
Avenue 5 clearly surfs on a rather quirky humor. It’s a parody of a science fiction series: we clearly think of star trek except that here, nothing ever goes right and the incidents will follow one after the other, for our greatest pleasure. As much to tell you that this crossing of the galaxy will not be easy, and that the nerves of passengers will be subjected to a severe test in the face of the incompetence of the cabin crew.
So, are we looking at Avenue 5 or not?
If you missed Hugh Laurie, you will be delighted to rediscover him in a very different role from that of Doctor House, although we find a certain sense of cynicism in him here! On the casting side, we also find Josh Gad (Las Vegas 21, Murder on the Orient Express) and Matt Woods (The Office). Avenue 5 is clearly a comedy, rather entertaining, which should delight fans of dark humor.
Avenue 5 (2020) 2 seasons of 8-9 episodes of 28 min to see on OCS (or Canal +).
