Avalanche reach Stanley Cup final with overtime win

Artturi Lehkonen sent his team to the Stanley Cup Finals for the second straight year.

Lehkonen scored in overtime and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Edmonton Oilers 6-5 on Monday to sweep the Western Conference final.

The Avalanche earned their first berth in the Stanley Cup Finals since 2001. They will face the winner of the series between the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers.

The Finnish winger also picked up two assists. He scored the goal that sent the Montreal Canadiens to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021.

Cale Makar scored one goal and had four assists. Captain Gabriel Landeskog was credited with a goal and two assists.

Nathan MacKinnon also shone with a goal and an assist. Devon Toews and Mikko Rantanen also hit the mark for Jared Bednar’s men.

Zach Hyman scored twice in the loss while Conor McDavid had a goal and two assists.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also flashed the red light for the Oilers. Leon Draisaitl had four assists.

Mike Smith stopped 36 shots in the loss.

Pavel Francouz won a sixth straight game in the playoffs – he still hasn’t suffered a loss in 2022. Preferred to the starting goaltender during the season, Darcy Kuemper, he stopped 30 shots.

With Oilers forward Evander Kane suspended for a dangerous body check on Nazem Kadri, rookie Dylan Holloway has entered the roster. Holloway, the 2020 first-round pick, had never played in the NHL until Monday.
