The Colorado Avalanche has extended head coach Jared Bednar’s contract by two years until the end of the 2023-24 season.
Bednar is in his sixth season at the helm of the Avalanche and is 191-154-40 (.548) as the team’s head coach. He is only two wins behind Bob Hartley (193) for the highest total in Colorado training history.
In the history of the team, which has its roots in Quebec, Bednar comes third for the most wins. Michel Bergeron (265) holds the record.
Hired on August 25, 2016, Bednar is currently the fifth longest-serving coach with his team, behind Jon Cooper, with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Paul Maurice, with the Winnipeg Jets, Jeff Blashill, with the Detroit Red Wings and Mike. Sullivan, with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Under Bednar’s tutelage, the Avalanche have qualified for the playoffs the past four seasons. He guided the team to a 24-18-1 record in 43 playoff games and they have reached the second round in the past three years.
“Jared has established himself as one of the best coaches in the NHL,” said Avalanche vice president and general manager Joe Sakic. He is a great leader who is trusted by our players and staff. Under his watchfulness, the team continued to improve every year. We know he’s the right person to help us fight for the Stanley Cup. ”
The 49-year-old Bednar led the Avalanche to the Presidents Trophy and Western Section title in 2020-21. In this season, the Avalanche showed its highest point percentage in its history (. 732).
“I’m grateful and excited to have this opportunity to continue to lead this team and build on what we’ve accomplished so far,” said Bednar. We know we haven’t accomplished our ultimate goal yet, but we have confidence in this group and we will continue to work hard to get there. ”
