autopsy of love at first sight between Fanny Ardant and Melvil Poupaud

Carine Tardieu confirms her talent for deciphering human relationships, with The Young Lovers which is released on Wednesday February 2, with Fanny Ardant and Melvil Poupaud. After Wind in the calves, on adolescence, and Take away my doubt, about a man in search of identity, The Young Lovers retraces the twists and turns of a love that is as magnificent as it is impossible between a 70-year-old woman and a man 20 years her junior. An impossible love for others, more than for themselves… Beautiful and touching.

At 70, Shauna no longer has any illusions about her power of seduction and the prospect of finding love again. She reconnects with Pierre, a doctor she met 15 years ago, twenty years younger, and who had never forgotten her. For him, the age difference does not come into play, with regard to a desirable woman. But Pierre is married and a father…

The Fanny Ardant-Melvil Poupaud duo is a most insightful choice that fully serves the film. His subject, going against the accepted idea that men would seek out women younger than them, puts ignored emotions in the balance. And goes against the male patterns pinned today by the #MeToo movement.

If Carine Tardieu’s production is in tune with its subject, in its delicacy as an empathetic observer, Fanny Ardant and Melevil Poupaud are its cornerstone, in the emotion of their interpretation. There is an almost palpable fusion of love on screen that brings them closer together, without effusion, withdrawn, discreet and honest. Carine Tardieu avoids overly explicit sex scenes, a must in all films, as they would become cumbersome and vain. If there are any in The young lovers, they are not really what we expected. No, it’s all about the looks, a pout, a nod, clumsy gestures… And it’s not of course these “young lovers” in spirit who are to blame, but the incomprehension of their loved ones who goes shatter everything.

France 3

Translator of teenage emotions in Wind in the calves and the destabilization of a mature man having the revelation of his parental origins in Take away my doubt, Carine Tardieu brings The young lovers which could be a third part in his exploration of human relationships. Sensitive, she finds a formal and emotional accuracy rarely seen on screen.

Summary: Shauna, 70, free and independent, has put her love life aside. However, she is disturbed by the presence of Pierre, this 45-year-old man whom she had just met, years earlier. And against all expectations, Pierre does not see in her “a woman of a certain age”, but a woman, desirable, whom he is not afraid to love. Except that Pierre is married and a father.
