Car thefts literally exploded during the summer of 2023, with a 50% increase in incidents. 80% of thefts are carried out by hacking keys using electronic systems.
On surveillance camera video, a car theft lasts no more than a minute. One of the thieves brandished a receiver in front of the car owner’s house. His accomplice, in front of the door, receives the signal. The vehicle opens and starts immediately. The thugs have just stolen the car without the slightest break-in. These electronic methods are now used in 80% flights.
SUVs particularly targeted
For owners, it is difficult to protect themselves from this. “I try to park it in my garage as often as possible.”said a motorist. The most targeted vehicles are SUVs, which represent 65% flights. Packed with electronics, they are easy to hack but also for resale. To protect yourself from this, you should not leave your car keys near the windows, or slip them into an aluminum-lined pocket. Blocking your steering wheel with a cane can also thwart an attempted theft.
