(Melbourne) Rebecca Marino booked her ticket to the main draw of the Australian Open on Friday when her compatriot Katherine Sebov withdrew.
Marina (182e) and Sebov (162e) faced each other in the third round of qualifying. The second threw in the towel after only two games, won by Marino.
Marino defeated Taiwanese Ya Yi Yang (209e) and the Frenchwoman Jessika Ponchet (133e) during the first two rounds of qualifying.
She will be making her seventh appearance in the main draw of this Grand Slam tournament. She has reached the second round twice, in 2011 and 2021.
Marino joins the Canadian delegation already made up of Félix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov, Milos Raonic and Leylah Annie Fernandez, in the main draw.
Gabriel Diallo was the other Canadian still in the qualifiers, but he lost to Belgian David Goffin in three sets of 3-6, 6-3 and 6-2.
Goffin is currently 107e, but he has already been ranked seventh in the ATP. He has already reached the quarter-finals in Melbourne.
Diallo, for his part, was trying to qualify for the main draw of a major tournament for the first time in his career.
